Our position re. 1.1: Protect all dogs as sentient beings under law

We call on the government to extend the Animal Welfare Act (2006) to all dogs, not just pets. This must include working dogs and those bred and used for animal experiments.

All dogs have the capacity to become pet dogs. If all dogs can be pets, it follows that all dogs must be protected as pets.

Self-regulation by the animal testing industry, the greyhound racing industry and the hunting community has failed. None of these groups have dog protection as their core interest, and where profit and welfare collide, welfare never wins. All dogs deserve protection under the Five Domains  of animal welfare.
